The Enneagram test is a gigantic load of shit. It hated me, it thought I had no friends, and it thought I'd sacrifice anything for my career.

"All I have to say is once this is over, the Iraqi people better be the freest fucking people on the face of the planet." - gywo

One of my most memorable competitive experiences was the Unreal Tournament over at the Fragwire party about a year ago. I won the tournament, but it wasn't an easy trip to the top. By the final three matches, I had some fierce competition. I started a match against a guy named Falcon and I quickly went down by 3. It was the first time I had no competitive nervousness. I just kicked it up a notch and said to myself, "I CANNOT lose." My mind, in its indecipherable language, knew that it was impossible to lose that game. Sure enough, I pulled off the greatest comeback I've ever accomplished and won the game 10-8.

Little did I suspect that I'd be presented with a harder challenge in real life in which my brain is reacting in the exact same way - real life. "I CANNOT fail," I thought to myself, once again thinking over the horrible consequences of failing - this time just a tad more painful than being knocked out of the tournament. Unfortunately, there's five months (to the day) remaining until we know which way this one goes.

Gave up on playing through Command & Conquer: Generals. It's loads of fun, but boy oh boy, do I suck at strategy games.

Promptly replaced on the "currently playing" list with Splinter Cell. I'm lovin' it so far.

Attention everyone:

I'm going to one-up the only persistent music mixer I know and assemble the great high-school-nostalgia mix cd. Except this time, it'll go light on stuff ripped from 102.1 and heavy on music with a bit more meaning, a bit more edge, and perhaps just a bit more nostalgia. You, the everyones, come in to fill in any of the gaps I might miss.

I'm talking mainly to three groups of people here:

The Amigos: you know who you are. If I spent the last summer with you, you fit. Stuff like Frontier Psychiatrist, Mr. Skruff - what else have we been obsessed with?

The Band: Eric, Greg, Daniel.. Does anything really need to go in here besides old-school Blink-182 songs and maybe a Pennywise tune? Oh, can't forget NOFX's 'The Brews.'

The Group Consisting Entirely of Aroon: Man, does that sound lame.. what an unnecessary ego boost for aroon. :p Regardless, musically, you deserve it man.. Deftones, old-school Limp Bizkit, Stabbing Westward, old-school Incubus.. what else?

An early and very tentative list:

-old-school days (junior high)
Deftones - Be Quiet and Drive (far away)
Limp Bizkit - Pollution
Stabbing Westward - Save Yourself
Orbital - Halcyon + On + On
Incubus - New Skin

-Times with the punk band (freshman year)
Pennywise - Every Single Day
Blink-182 - What's My Age Again . honorary mention - all of cheshire cat
NOFX - The Brews
Goo Goo Dolls - Broadway

-Ty introduces Blake to trip-hop and IDM (sophomore year)
Aphex Twin - Windowlicker
Thievery Corporation - Focus on Sight
DJ Cam - Dieu Reconnaitra Les Siens

-Somewhere in between
Millencolin - No Cigar
Incubus - Aqueous Transmission (space permitting)
Linkin Park - Pushing Me Away (space + patience with LP lovers permitting)
Tosca - Orozco (space permitting)

-Times with the amigos (junior/senior year)
The Avalanches - Frontier Psychiatrist
T.A.T.U. - Not Gonna Get Us

-Steph's phase (senior year)
Vanessa Carlton - A Thousand Miles
John Mayer - No Such Thing
Telepopmusik - Breathe

-It's all over
Opus III - It's a Fine Day (radio edit) - brownie points to he or she who can find an mp3 of the edit playing on KDL
Dzihan + Kamien - Colores (space permitting)
Michelle Branch - Goodbye to You . All You Wanted (space permitting)

and to close things out...
Incubus - Nice to Know You

If you think this needs any changes, leave comments or bug me personally. Free copies to anyone who wants one.

GTA: Vice City postmortem:

An absolute masterpiece of a game. The best title to come out of the UK since GTA3, and before that, well, it had been quite a while since a great game came from over there. Vice City cashed in on the commercial success of GTA3 and did the impossible: Rockstar North took a successful execution of a very ambitious design and improved on it. In typical sequel fashion, they took most aspects of GTA3 and simply made them bigger. More radio stations with longer soundtracks. The 80s music license was a smart gimmick, but now they're in danger of using the decade gimmick over and over again a la Austin Powers. Rockstar, luckily, is smart enough not to do so. [Clarification: the game is published by Rockstar Games, and developed by Rockstar North - the newly-renamed DMA Design after a buyout after GTA3's release.] More vehicles. Motorcycles were well-balanced, which was a huge relief. More weapons. Now if only the M4 had auto-targeting. More missions and plot branches. More extras. Upon finishing the plot line and triggering the end credits, the statistics menu revealed I had completed 60% of the game. And that was after acquiring most of the real estate properties and completing their missions. Unlike a typical sequel, though, the attention to detail actually went up as the size of the game increased. I remember watching with amazement as Cubans and Haitians got into a gunfight, seeing ambulances show up, reviving the Haitians and seeing the Cubans kill them once more while the paramedics got killed in the crossfire.

The single biggest change in VC had to be the creation of a main character. Tommy Vercetti is easily one of the better video game characters ever created, and we have Ray Liotta to thank for the brilliant voice acting that brought him to life. This was a huge undertaking for Rockstar, but it was worth every penny they spent toward all the added dialogue, voice, and animation that gave us a round character to play through instead of the comparable silent automaton we were given in GTA3. Tommy didn't make the game any more immersive, per se, but it made the player so much more proud to act as badass Tommy than the nameless goon in GTA3 who was always someone else's tool.

Gameplay in VC is grand enough to fill its own dedicated novel. But anyone who's played the game knows exactly what's going on. The beauty of it is the percentage completion system. The minute I get the time I'm going to pursue the 100%, something I haven't actively wanted to do since Donkey Kong Country.

Graphics are the game's only weak point. The environments are absolutely beautiful, as positively everyone has seen by now. The problem is that these gorgeous views are ahead of their time. The PS2, with the current knowledge programmers have of it, isn't powerful enough to handle the complexity and detail of the VC world. Maybe in a couple years, when developers know how to get more power out of it, we'll see a future title that handles the visuals a little better. Framerates were noticeably slower than GTA3, and that's even with blurry-screen mode turned on. I can't count the number of times I drove along a sidewalk only to suddenly run into a palm tree or a lamppost or a police officer that popped up three feet in front of me. Yet I saw the Downtown skyscrapers even from Washington Beach. Oops.

Sound: very, very nice. Extremely high production values. I didn't think the radio, with all its cleverness, could stand up to GTA3 coming into VC. Once again, I was pleasantly surprised. Huge kudos to both studios for adding all the extra material. Even after finishing the game, the radio hasn't gotten so old that I just have to turn it off. Even the classic sarcastic humor managed to stay in, which kept me hugely amused. I don't think I'll ever understand the world's obsession with Lazlow, but I'm personally ecstatic that Fernando Martinez made such a triumphant return. Avery Carrington (Burt Reynolds) was hilarious, too. Kudos to the brothers Houser and Lazlow for some good material.

Production value: dear Lord, I don't think any studio has ever done it this well. These guys have redefined attention to detail, and they've done so in style. It's easy to see that all the talent used in this game cost millions of dollars, not even counting the 100+ development staff. It's considered poor taste to give one person credit for a great game, but it's obvious that the Houser brothers have been keeping tabs on every aspect of the game's development and when the right guy with the right vision gets authority over everything, good things happen.

Oddly enough, I just discovered that I've followed Gamespot's review system up to this point. But their Tilt idea is retarded so I'm going to just close things up:

Vice City is easily one of the best games I've ever played. It's wholly gratifying to play, is extremely well-written, and raises the bar in game development for Rockstar North's ability to top themselves on a very ambitious sequel to a very ambitious title, and even to Rockstar themselves (as much as I hate giving publishers credit for doing anything valuable for games) for expanding North's operating environment and giving them access to so many more resources to make a truly great game.

What's next: Two rumors are floating. One says GTA: San Andreas will be more material following the Vice City formula and will be out this fall.* The other says North is going to go back to the drawing board and release Grand Theft Auto 4 late in 2004 (expect delays into late 2005). My prediction says both will happen, but expect one or both of them to hit the XBox.

* Recently, a Rockstar employee registered the domain name www.gtasanandreas.com. On the other hand, Vice City had kentpaul.com - not exactly a dead giveaway.

What the fuck.

So Clinton gets a blowjob and lies about it. Impeached.

Bush fabricates a bunch of shit about Saddam having chemical weapons, gets discovered that he's lying about it, and no impeachment.

Consistency, politicians? Please?

[disclaimer: this does not deny that saddam has those weapons. just not in the quantities that we're being led to believe. in fact, we're completely ignoring the facts on this one and going on the supposed 'leadership morals' that got Clinton in trouble. as with all political threads, don't post comments or i will delete them and ban you.]

Wow, way too much computer gaming lately.

Lan party after lan party after lan party... and all that leading up to the huge disappointment that was the PCK party where we lost consecutively to the teams that ultimately took first and second. By 3AM, I felt like I had run out of games to play - and so did the rest of our group. So the next three hours were spent in a half-asleep limbo playing Stepmania.

Needless to say, it's time for a break from computer gaming and a return to the basics. Max agreed with my complaint that we haven't played enough SSB lately. On top of that, I got a surprise call from Thomas basically saying the same thing. Personally, I think there hasn't been enough Mario Party, either.

That's the thing with hardcore gaming - the good players play the game because it's what they enjoy; it's what triggers the endorphines and adrenaline in their brains and that's how players get the pleasure of being 'in the zone.' I've only once been in the zone playing a computer game - and it turned out to be a game nobody played at all. On consoles, though, I get it all the time - that's how we all managed to spend so much time playing Goldeneye back in the day. SSB comes pretty close to being the same thing, but more importantly, when we all play SSB it's a good time. Zero frustration, very close matches, and we all happen to be extremely good at what we do (hence our owning up on everyone else at Gus's party). Being a good hardcore player isn't about the frustration of constant loss or fighting to develop strategy and skill. It's about just playing, playing, playing. And if you can enjoy that, you've got a good chance at becoming a great player.

I like small competition. As opposed to the big times. The stakes are lower, but the adrenaline rush is just as big, victory is just as thrilling, and the players have enough social skills that they can actually talk and have a good time with one another when the games aren't playing.

A couple weeks there was a shindig at the house of a guy named Gus. Gus was a friend of a friend's younger brother - a friend of a friend of a friend. Nevertheless, I showed up at Gus's house, as did about 25 others. I suddenly found myself in a room warmer than hell, surrounded by high schoolers of all ages, 99% of them male. Well, maybe 92%, since 1% female in a group of 25 would equal out to one guy being 1/4 female and that's just gross.

After a few rounds of 6on6 Halo (a feat accomplished with no less than four big-screen TVs and Xboxes in the same house), our party loaded up Super Smash Bros. on the biggest of the big-screens and organized a tournament with 32 players - 24 or so humans and 8 computer players.

In the third game, one guy suddenly whined aloud when he realized he was matched against Gus in the first round. Apparently, Gus was the king of all things SSB, the winner of the previous tournament, and the only person alive who can use Ness worth a damn at all. Gus easily defeated his opponent, a nameless lowerclassman from Lamar.

The very next game was myself against a similar nameless lowerclassman. Easy win. 12 more games come and go to complete the first round of the tournament. Oh shit, I say to myself as I realize my next match is against Gus, the god himself. I take up the controller and ready up, figuring I'll lose but I'll at least put in some effort and see what kind of fight I can put up.

Gus gets himself situated and readies up. The map is set to Onett. Thank God it's a decent level. He kicks my ass close-range, then he kicks my ass long-range. I'm up to about 80% damage while he's comfortably at 20%. I finally manage to get in some good shots, bringing it up to 80-70. He throws a good Smash attack and kills me right as a Warp star falls where we had fought. On my second life I rush straight over to the Warp star, and for some reason Gus hasn't grabbed it. I make a guick grab at it and nail him with a direct hit, and we're tied at 0% and two lives to go. A few "ohh's" come from the crowd of 20 or so watching the match - apparently it was some kind sign of defiance against the tyranny of Gus and Ness.

In the second life I definitely hit my stride and managed to kill Gus before I lost the life. This threw the crowd into a frenzy and suddenly we had a tense moment on our hands. As Gus killed me in retaliation, a disappointed "awwww" came out and we returned to our tie: 0 to 0, one life left. Gus started to slip - I hit him across the map with a couple easy shots. I take a lead and the tension comes back, stronger than it had been before. Gus quickly fights back, and soon it's 80-70, myself in worse shape. I fly over him as he holds a green shell and shield in mid-air in anticipation of his throw. He waits until I begin to fall to the ground and then throws the shell and takes me out. Gus wins. The crowd screams with indeterminate emotion and Gus shoots up out of his chair and celebrates his victory for a split second before turning around and throwing out his hand to shake mine, pushing out the words 'that was close' while trying to regain his breath.

And the minute I lost, I gained the knowledge that the next game we play, I'll win. I feel these things.

In the next round, Gus lost for the first time ever in competition to Thomas, who went on to win the tournament. We, the seniors, truly rocked Gus's party. Here I thought we were just playing for fun all this time.

So I took the Camry of Love out on a joyride. Going north on Davis (Davis Blvd, the one in NRH) I followed a guy on a Harley, so loud I couldn't hear the Avalanches album on its second time looping. So Harley and I go past a gas station where there's another guy on a Harley looking to turn out. The two Harley riders friendly wave to each other as the one passes.

That struck me as interesting. Southern hospitality taken to extremes, one could say. On the other hand, here were two guys who didn't know each other's names, but they picked each other out of a crowd of motorists because they rode Harleys. They were both fairly decked out in the leather and the jeans and black t-shirts, but they weren't your typical bearded Bubbas you see at Christmastime riding down the highway with teddybears in their arms and their wives sitting behind. No, these were two ordinary fellas who just happened to ride their Harleys around. They probably had decent day jobs and lives outside their bikes. And still, each rider waved to the other because he knew that there were qualities in that guy that were prerequisite to having one of those bikes. The two riders waved to each other like brothers from the same fraternity, like two men who had grown up as Scouts, like ... they knew each could trust the other.

Sometimes people ask me *why* I'm a game-lover, why I keep doing what seems like such a monumental waste of time. I can't help but think to myself because I couldn't get a Harley.

So someone took it upon themselves to write a complete history of Capture the Flag as it pertains to Quake3. I loaded up this second part in a three-part series just to see if my old team, [warp], was in there. I don't know why they would be - few people remember [we are reasonable people] and the few who do remember us as either great sports or really funny goofasses.

Yes, goofasses.

Then there it was, in the review of a post-season setup for one season of CAL: The seeding for the East division play-offs were #1 Evolution, #2 Eradicate, #3 Affliction, #4 Massive Destruction, #5 Killers Inc, #6 Virus.23, #7 [warp], and #8 kfc.

And that was it.

#7, warp. Barely hanging in at the top of the pile. Could easily lose their spot to one of the many other teams out there, but somehow managed to make it in. That is the historical note of [warp] - a decent competitive team. Great buncha guys to play with. Etc.

There was a time when my life revolved around [warp]. I loved every second of it. I'd say one of the top 3 experiences of my life was Quakecon 2001 spent with "the [warp] thugs and friends," as they came to be known. Those guys were my best friends. I spent every second of that weekend laughing uncontrollably. And I even played well. I really, really belonged with that group of people.

So then it fell apart. CTF died - hence the writing of the history. [warp] had died sometime before and I've only really managed to keep in touch with one player, a guy who's me with an extra four years. Those guys were the impetus for my choosing Austin - at the time I reveled in the idea of living on fast-food, caffeine, and gaming like I did during Quakecon, and spending an entire four years laughing uncontrollably like I did for four days during that sweltering August of 2001.

So everyone outgrew the game. The older members grew out of gaming altogether and got jobs and made lives for themselves. The younger members run into each other every now and again and YELL STUPID THINGS IN ALL CAPS LIKE THE OLD DAYS!@??!!?!@??? Life will sadly never again be what it was playing in [warp]. But it's a memory that I'll never give up. Thankfully, that clan made history with someone else. And like the [warp] that was true to its day, few people will really understand what that clan was worth to its players.

[we are reasonable people] - 2000 - 2002

My guitar is my boyfriend.

The new answer to said question:
Wouldn't you like to know ;)

Is she no longer single? :~(
